Given the awareness of the potential implications of Swine Flu, we offer resources
for your review/information. Firstly, info from CNN, which is a great site kept
current with links to various other sites. Secondly, info from the ISSA (International
Sanitary Supply Association) is also provided. Included are links that cover the
background, general info, role of personal hygiene, etc. Also, below are documents
which provide specific helpful info on the cleaning and disinfection
of facilities. The first link is a short note dealing with the Swine Flu; the second
is an article dealing with SuperBugs in general and how to disinfect
and decontaminate facilities. There is also a Business/Organization Pandemic/Epidemic

Check Technical Reports & Presentations, section 4F for tools and resources to help you prepare for and prevent serious outbreaks.
Because of its recent spread and toll in Mexico City, Mexico, and worldwide, the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization
are concerned that the swine flu that hit there could be a new, stronger strain
of the virus. Accordingly, the U.S. government declared a public health emergency
yesterday in response to the swine flu outbreak.
With the threat of a swine flu pandemic and cleaning's role in pandemic preparation,
ISSA has compiled the following resources for members to consider.
H1N1 Disinfection Find some good information
regarding H1N1 Disinfection, including approved disinfectants, Enviro's position
regarding disinfecting cleaning (Defcon 1, 2 & 3), incorporating several disinfectants,
As we watch the progression of the H1N1 Flu, now being commonly referred to as
the Human Swine Flu, we need to remember that the average flu kills 50,000 people,
and the H1N1 Flu is not average. In fact, it seems to attack the healthiest people,
causing their extremely healthy immune systems to over-react. It is this over-reaction
that causes the pneumonia-like condition that causes death.
The media has softened on their coverage lately, but that does not mean this threat
is over. Not at all. Keep in mind that with the miracle of modern media and the
internet, we have been kept very aware of this emerging threat, much sooner than
we would have been just 20 years ago. Back then, the general public probably wouldn't
even know about it yet.
Also, keep in mind that the 1918 Pandemic hit it in three waves, not one, ultimately
taking between 50 million to 100 million lives. We have to stay on top of this.
Here are some excellent websites that allow us to closely track this outbreak.
The first one is HealthMap.com, a global disease alert map pinpointing each H1N1
Flu outbreak location, with a brief description of the event.
Another very interesting site is PandemicFlu.gov. The site acts as a clearing
house for current information on H1N1 from the CDC, the World Health Organization
(WHO), the FDA, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and others. Very interesting
www.recombinomics.com Committed to
the study of recombination as the driver of rapid molecular evolution and the emergence
of novel infectious agents.
There are literally thousands of website pages that provide information on H1N1
and many appear very alert to the ever-present threat of even newer pathogenic threats
We suggest book-marking key sites and checking them often. Even when this threat
is past, we need to stay alert and be prepared for the next biological threat that
might be just over the horizon. After all, our customers, our communities and our
own families are counting on us to be the front line of defense.
Congratulations to our winners Claudia, Joe and Zack from Great Neck North Middle School in Great Neck, New York.
Our web site contains a lot of great information, and is easy to navigate. Check out the tabs on the top of the page. When your cursor is on them, a drop menu will appear.
